A new idea for sharing ideas
3/26/20242 min read
While thinking about what this website might become at some point, I was at many different stages. Right now, it is mostly a portfolio. An avatar. A digital representation of Polylight and everything the name stands for (open-mindedness, creativity, nature, boundary breaking and more).
But this might not be the point at which my journey comes to an end. Certainly, being able to independently (and currently also without any chance for others to openly discuss, i.e. a comment section) share anything that comes to my mind and make it look beautiful is quite nice to have and quite a good brand seller.
But I am thinking of something entirely different. I'm thinking of a platform, similar to Instagram in a way (LET ME FINISH NO STOP!!) that lets its users share stuff. But not about their new pet, top 10 pranks or fashion. How about a platform where people can share what truly amazes them?
The main reason for many people not getting into a certain thing (like learning an instrument or a programming language, video editing, sports or even an entire job) is that they try it, then at some point lose the initial burst of dopamine that comes from doing something new and different, and then lose it again. People have asked me how I have the energy to create so much stuff in my spare time. But they have never asked me WHY I create so much stuff in my spare time. It's not because I get depressed if I don't have anything to work on. It's because I'm truly amazed by the things I'm doing.
I love psychological horror games because it intrigues me how little is needed to drive a human crazy.
I love video effects because it's magical how a few particles can change the look of a scene entirely.
I love working with synthesisers because I love twisting knobs and being inspired by a totally new sound that I just created.
I love creating stuff because I love what I'm doing.
It's that simple. And while thinking about the psychological, maybe even philosophical topic of interest in other people (i.e. what's real and what's fake interest, when is someone actually asking questions out of fascination for you vs when are they asking because they don't want awkward silence), this idea came back to my mind.
I've got to know some very few people that show amazing interest in the things I do. These people were amongst the most fascinating people I've met yet. I want to try being like them a little more, but have caught myself asking random and irrelevant questions in discussions, hoping to be like them, instead completely missing the point.
What if this kind of behaviour is also based on fascination? Fascination in for example the way different people talk? The motivations they carry with them going through their everyday life? Their approach to challenges? Their way to, hell, brush their teeth? There's so much diversity, but if focused on everything, it's like focusing on nothing. I'd love to ask those people what amazes them. What positive motivation makes them do what they do?
Something to think about. Maybe also more of a note to myself. But I'll work it through eventually.
Cheers!
Phil
